The lochs, hills, grasses, and skies of the Northern Highlands change constantly under shifting light and clouds. One minute the scene is dark and eerie, and the next moment sunlight dances across hills and fields as in this shot. No wonder the Highlands are known for their drama, both natural and human. This view is of Loch Hope, known as one of Scotland’s best sea trout fishing lochs. I see this Loch II image as a partner to yesterday’s post: Highland Loch I: Cold Day. I’d like to go back and shoot all day from any one spot in the Highlands. And even more I’d love to walk the Highlands slowly… Click on WALK to read more about walking Scotland.

This limited edition (/50), signed fine art giclee print is available from Sally Ross Photography: 16″ x 10.7″ ($85.00); 24″ x 16″ ($175.00); 30″ X 20″ ($290.00).

Bob and Kathy were great B&B hosts in Ceres, just a few miles outside of St. Andrews. For the most part, my morning walks were along paths untrodden by other tourists’ boots. One outing took me through the village where I came upon the wonders of the Fife Folk Museum with its yards full of antique machinery. The detail of these gears caught my eye, especially against the contrasting stone. Learn more about the Fife Folk Museum by clicking on those words.

Even the single track roads are on the map in Scotland, allowing adventurers like us to find undiscovered secrets such as this view of Glen Cassley at the end of the 11 mile road off the A839. The road ends here, but we don’t mind retracing our trip through such glorious scenery. Maps to every Scottish corner are are available for those who adventure on foot! See the Explorer Map for Glen Cassley and Glen Oykel.

Our B&B was on the Bay of Broadford in southern Skye, but I took off into the hills for an early morning walk. I love the freedom of walking in the United Kingdom, where you are welcome to open gates, cross fields, climb hills, cross streams, and feel a part of the land. This morning I was greeted by the common herd of sheep, but also by this stunning white mirage of a horse, backlit by the sun. I chose black and white to emphasize the horse, and I elongated the cropping to provide context. Click here to learn more about the Scottish Outdoor Access Code.

Sandra and I should have checked a map for the hike up Ben Bhraggie, just north of Golspie, East Sutherland, Scotland. But it was a glorious day! Between us we have 130 years, but neither she, the local, nor I, the visitor, had made this walk, and we were eager! We could see for miles at each level. The forests were talk and cool. Our lunch on a log felt good for a bit of fuel to make the final climb.

And then the tough part started! We’d somehow gotten onto the mountain bike trail. Obviously their idea of a good trail (hills and dales) and ours are much different! But we made it to the top to survey the world–all the way to Tarbet Ness lighthouse glowing in sunlight, across Loch Fleet, and north past Brouda. Thanks to Margaret for driving us both ways — and for incredible patience!
