Glenuig: Evening View

I’ll end this 30-day saga of sharing Photos of the Day with a very personal image: the view from my beloved cottage outside Dornoch. Every morning as I parted the curtains, the morning version of this view thrilled me. And every evening, I waited and watched anxiously to see how the skies and the light would enhance that view. A simple pasture, pines, a rock wall, but such drama! Glen Cassley View, near Dornoch, Scotland

Even the single track roads are on the map in Scotland, allowing adventurers like us to find undiscovered secrets such as this view of Glen Cassley at the end of the 11 mile road off the A839.  The road ends here, but we don’t mind retracing our trip through such glorious scenery.  Maps  to every Scottish corner are are available for those who adventure on foot!  See the Explorer Map for Glen Cassley and Glen Oykel.

Croft House: Above Spinningdale, Scotland

As we explored along another single track road outside Dornoch and above Spinningdale, we dead-ended at a farm where a farmer, older woman, and helper were shearing. So we waved, backed around and down the hill, stopping to capture this charming croft house in the fields below.  One of my favorite shots, I believe this image captures the Highlands, the lonliness of life there, and the grandeur of the setting.  I wonder what history these places have known?  Perhaps we can discover it through poetry.

Dune Grasses and Sky #2

The modulation of highlights, shadows and midtones gives depth to this image, I believe. I was striving to allow the grasses to reach both above and below the earth making them central and connective.  Click here to enjoy a poem reflecting on dune grasses as well.

Garden Wall

Textures in sunlight intrigued me on this morning walk in Dornoch, Scotland. This garden wall appeared as I walked the back road up behind the cathedral to get a view out over the town to the Dornoch Firth beyond. As always, however, it is the small places, the moments when someone else walked away and I came upon a place, that entices me to take a photograph.  Try the SEARCH option on my blog to find other photographs of Dornoch…how I miss it!

Drama: Dornoch Firth (Scotland)

I swear there is celestial music in the Scottish heavens, music we cannot hear but only see.  How else to explain the constant shifting of light, the interplay of water and land, the evocation of emotions you don’t even know you feel yet.  Every time I cross the Dornoch Firth bridge I stop to capture the moment of sound, sight, feeling, smell.  This time my camera managed to catch a glimpse a bit of it too.

Approach to Ben Bhraggie

Sandra and I should have checked a map for the hike up Ben Bhraggie, just north of Golspie, East Sutherland, Scotland.  But it was a glorious day!  Between us we have 130 years, but neither she, the local, nor I, the visitor, had made this walk, and we were eager!  We could see for miles at each level.  The forests were talk and cool.  Our lunch on a log felt good for a bit of fuel to make the final climb.

And then the tough part started! We’d somehow gotten onto the mountain bike trail. Obviously their idea of a good trail (hills and dales) and ours are much different!  But we made it to the top to survey the world–all the way to Tarbet Ness lighthouse glowing in sunlight, across Loch Fleet, and north past Brouda.  Thanks to Margaret for driving us both ways — and for incredible patience!
